Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia（BC州副総督）オフィスとのメールのやり取り

カナダに住んでいる日本人であれば「BC州の州都は？」と聞かれて「Vancouverです」などと答える人はいないと信じたいが、日本では結構そう思っている節がある。

2010年に開かれた冬季オリンピックや、今夏の女子サッカーW 杯カナダ大会開催でVancouverが良く知られるようになったのは結構なことだが、BC州の州都はVictoriaである。

という事は、この州の副総督（Lieutenant Governor）の住む公邸はVictoriaにあり、通称「Government House」（以下GH）と呼ばれている。

ちなみに、Lieutenant Governorとはカナダの国家元首であるカナダ国王（現在はエリザベス女王）の名代として各州に置かれている抽象的な代理者の呼称で、総括するGovernor General（総督）はオタワに在住しているのである。

Victoria の公邸はダウンタウンからちょっと離れた場所にあるが、物々しい警備はなく、時間内なら一般市民はその広大な庭園に自由に出入り可能である。乳母車を引く親子連れや、ジョギングを楽しむ人々などが常時垣間見られ、時には野外コンサートも開かれる。

この庭には池や噴水が入り組んで設置され、大きな岩を見事に配置して造られたロックガーデンに、這うように咲く珍種の花々が咲いていたり、夏場に咲き誇るバラ園、BC 州のアイリス・ソサエティーが手を施す各種のアヤメ科の花々、果ては多種多様なハーブ・ガーデンもあると言った具合で、それぞれが形よくまとまっている。

また館内の一部には、Victoria独特のハイティーを楽しめるティー・ルームもある。この庭を眺めながら、午後のひと時をお茶やスイーツを楽しみながらゆっくりと優雅に過ごすことも出来るのだ。

私が最初にここを訪れたのは昨年の夏で、そぞろ歩きをしながら隈なく見て廻ったのだが、前庭の一角には、VIPの訪問を記念する写真プラグも飾られているのを知った。

その一枚は、2009年にカナダを訪問された天皇陛下が当時の副総督と握手しているものであるが、写っているのは天皇陛下のみ。同行したはずの皇后陛下の姿はない。

はっきりと断っておくが、私は右よりの国粋過ぎでもなければ、皇室ワッチャーでも全くない。

だが私は、両陛下のこの旅でお二人がトロントに来られた折に取材に当たったため、その時の体験から、時にはお二人が別れて異なった場所を訪問することを知っていた。そこでこのGHも天皇陛下だけが訪問されたのかと思ったのである。

ところがこの春GH館内ツアーに参加した折のガイドが、両陛下が揃って訪問され、公

式夕食会の後には、美智子妃がピアノを弾かれ（ジャズのナンバーだったとのこと）、出席者一同多いに盛り上がったとのエピソードを披露した。

「じゃあ、どうして写真には天皇陛下だけしか写ってないの？」という素朴な疑問が湧いたのである。

そこで以下のメールをこの夏GHの広報に送ってみた。

To Whom It May Concern,

I moved to this beautiful island a year ago.  Since that time my husband and I have been exploring many places, and when we like a place, we go back to it to enjoy more.

Government House’ beautiful gardens certainly counts amongst our favorites.  When we went there the first time, we noticed a plaque in the front yard. It shows photos of Royals and VIPs’ who have visited there.

I understand that in July 2009, the Emperor and the Empress of Japan made an official visit. However in the photo on the plaque, only the Emperor is shown, the Empress is not included.

During a tour of Government House this May, our tour guide from the Costume Museum, Susan Erling-Tyrell, told me that both of them had a very enjoyable time, and that Empress Michiko even played piano after the official dinner.

I wonder why the photo shows the only the Emperor.  If there is a specific reason that the Empress is excluded, I would like to know why.

I much appreciate your attention.

アメリカのホワイト・ハウスでさえも、一般の人から送られてくるメールや手紙には必ず返事を書くというのに、GHからは何の返事もない。

私は「それって失礼じゃない？!」と思い、一ヵ月後にメールが届いているかどうかの問い合わせをした。

そこでやっとDirector Operations and Management Servicesの某氏から送られて来た返事が以下である。

Dear Ms. Miyamatsu-Saunders:

Thank you for your interest in Government House, and the interpretive panels we have recently installed around the property.

I was both thrilled and honoured to have been on staff during Their Imperial Majesties’ visit in 2009.  In fact, it was a highlight in my career.

During the course of designing the “special visits” panel to which you refer, we sifted through thousands of photos taken during dozens of visits that we thought were most significant to Government House.  It was agreed that the visit of Their Imperial Majesties in 2009 was a highlight in the 150 year history of the property.  From the many photos, we ultimately chose the one you saw on the panel.

Please accept our highest assurances that there was not a deliberate choice to exclude Her Imperial Majesty.  We only chose what we thought was the best picture.  Interestingly, if you look at the photo of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth’s visits, you will not see her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh.  Again, not a deliberate choice.  Just the way the decisions were made.  We hope no signs of disrespect are apparent.

確かに、同じプラグに載っているエリザベス女王訪問時の写真にはエジンバラ公は写っていない。

再度書くが私は皇室ファンでも何でもない。だが一般的に考えて「これって何だか変」と言う疑問がまだ残っているのだ。

ヴィクトリア流かどうか知らないが、いまだにすっきりとしない思いを感じており、それを指摘するメールを再度送るべきか迷っているのである。
